Abstract
This study explores the formation and transformation of urban heritage in Luang Prabang, Laos, with a focus on the introduction and localization of French colonial architecture through its fusion with traditional Lao forms. As the former capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom, the city reflects layered cultural influences from Khmer, Siamese, and French rule. The Beaux-Arts style, introduced in the early 20th century, was hybridized with local Buddhist and wooden architecture, contributing to the city’s distinctive urban landscape. Since its UNESCO World Heritage designation in 1995, Luang Prabang has faced challenges from rapid commercialization and cultural displacement. The study highlights the need for heritage preservation strategies that balance development with the protection of both tangible and intangible cultural values.
