Abstract
The issue of whether leftist parties cater to insiders or outsiders in the labor market has been a topic of debate in the literature. However, previous studies have primarily focused on short-term causality through quantitative analysis, overlooking the role of leftist parties in addressing labor market dualization over the long term. This study aims to address this gap by using a comparative historical analysis approach to investigate the historical causality between labor market dualization and leftist parties. Specifically, the study conducts a close examination of the labor market policy formulation process of the Swedish Social Democratic Party (SDP) since the early 20th century. Rather than simply attributing the SDP's bias toward insider policies to the deindustrialization era, the study emphasizes the path dependence of a series of policies designed to protect outsiders in the past that ultimately led to their current insiderness. By shedding light on the complex and intertwined historical factors that have shaped the relationship between leftist parties and labor market insiders and outsiders, this study provides a more nuanced understanding of the dynamics at play in this critical area of political economy.
