Abstract

Within a post-structuralist tradition that emphasizes the significance and relevance of identity politics, discourse surrounding the European Union's emergent identity as a novel kind of actor in international society was primarily catalyzed by the articulation of the "Normative Power Europe" concept. Against this backdrop, this study seeks to examine the European Union's normative identity and to demonstrate how its human rights policy, particularly its focus on the abolition of capital punishment, embodies a postmodern commitment. Furthermore, it will argue how this commitment simultaneously enhances the EU's ontological security. Through this theoretical exploration, the research aims to offer not only a critical analysis of the European Union as a new political experiment but also to investigate how it endeavors to transcend Westphalian world order, one of the defining characteristics of contemporary international politics, which legitimizes the state's monopoly on violence within a given territory, therefore making international relations more prone to conflicts.
