초록

The article examines Niccolò Tommaseo’s engagement with popular poetry as a privileged lens for rethinking the relationship between people, nation, and language in the decades preceding Italian unification. Focusing on the Canti popolari toscani, corsi, illirici, greci and on Tommaseo’s field experience in the Pistoiese (1832), it shows how he develops a specifically Catholic and liberal variant of Romantic Volkskunde, in which the "voice of the people" acquires both philological significance and civil function. Far from being a mere collector of folk materials, Tommaseo transforms popular songs into a laboratory where linguistic history, ethnographic observation, and national pedagogy intersect. The article demonstrates how the Canti popolari construct a conception of the people as both repository of ancient memories and active agent in the formation of a modern civil consciousness.
