초록
This study's aim is to analyze Vico's idea of Europe, which has been traditionally identified as based either on a medieval idea religious homogeneity or on the enlightenment idea of civilization in contrast to barbarism. Unlike previous studies, however, this study tries to prove that Vico proposed an alternative and original historical paradigm, which refused the monistic world view inherent in both perspectives and allowed for a plurality of religions and civilizations. Vico's idea of Europe, quite different from others of his time, is a precursor of the identity that the European Union pursues today.
Abstract
This study's aim is to analyze Vico's idea of Europe, which has been traditionally identified as based either on a medieval idea religious homogeneity or on the enlightenment idea of civilization in contrast to barbarism. Unlike previous studies, however, this study tries to prove that Vico proposed an alternative and original historical paradigm, which refused the monistic world view inherent in both perspectives and allowed for a plurality of religions and civilizations. Vico's idea of Europe, quite different from others of his time, is a precursor of the identity that the European Union pursues today.
