본 연구는 다양한 민족적․문화적 배경을 가진 선수들로 구성된 프랑스 축구 대표팀, ‘레 블뢰(Les Bleus)’가 1998년과 2018년 FIFA 월드컵에서의 우승하며 다문화적 통합과 국가적 자부심의 상징으로 자리 잡은 과정을 탐색하였다. 특히, 상상된 공동체(Imagined Communities) 개념을 바탕으로 축구가 국민적 연대와 국가 공동체 형성을 촉진하는 기제로 작용하는 방식을 살펴보았다. 축구는 단순한 스포츠를 넘어 다문화적 연대와 국가적 정체성을 재구성에 효과적인 기제로 작용했다. 하지만 축구는 사회적 통합을 강화하는 긍정적 효과를 가지는 동시에, 경기 결과나 사회적 맥락에 따라 갈등과 차별을 드러내는 한계를 보이기도 한다. 프랑스 축구 대표팀 사례는 다문화적 배경의 시민들이 국가 공동체로서 정체성을 형성하는 과정을 보여주며, 축구가 다문화사회로 진입한 국가에 사회통합을 위한 정책적․문화적 도구로 활용될 가능성을 제시한다.
Abstract
This study explores how the French national soccer team, Les Bleus, composed of players from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, has become a symbol of multicultural integration and national pride through its victories at the 1998 and 2018 FIFA World Cups. Drawing on the concept of Imagined Communities, this study examines how soccer serves as a mechanism to promote national solidarity and the formation of national communities. The soccer-based mechanism has been demonstrated to facilitate not only multicultural solidarity but also the reconstruction of national identity, thereby serving as a catalyst for the formation of a sense of national community.However, while soccer has been shown to have a positive effect on social cohesion, it is important to acknowledge its limitations, which have the potential to result in conflict and discrimination, depending on the specific outcome of a match and the prevailing social context. The case of the French national soccer team offers a compelling illustration of the process by which individuals from multicultural backgrounds form an identity as a national community. It also suggests the potential for soccer to be utilized as a policy and cultural instrument for social inclusion in countries with multicultural societies.
