근대스포츠의 발전이후 스포츠는 국가이데올로기를 전파하는 수단 및 국가주의의 형성의 도구로서 스포츠를 통한 국가정체성 형성에 기능하여 왔다. 특히 신자유주의로의 국제사회 변화는 국가 간의 경쟁이 다양하게 나타나면서 스포츠는 국가이익과 국가 간의 관계에 중요한 변수로 작용하고 있다. 그 가운데에서 축구의 국가주의화 현상은 이러한 경쟁을 더 부추기고 있다. 한국사회의 강력한 민족주의적 사회구조를 볼 때, 축구에 대한 통제와 지배는 근대화를 거쳐 현대에 이르기까지 국가주의와 끊임없이 상호 보강작용을 해왔다. 2002년 한․일 월드컵 당시 미디어나 국가에서 홍보하는 민족이라는 상상적 공동체는 수백만 명의 국민들로 하여금 국민형성과 국가주의적 동원으로서의 축구를 통한 국가 정체성을 심어주었다. 그러나 한국국민의 축구 대표 팀에 대한 지나친 국가주의적 성향은 축구를 국가적 에너지로 연결시키는 것에만 집중하는 나머지 배타적 민족주의로 갈 우려도 있다. 국가 정체성을 위한 민족주의에 초점이 맞춰지다 보면, 다른 국가에 대한 배타적 정서가 과정상에서 나타 날 수도 있는 것이다. 따라서 한국국가 축구팀의 승리와 패배가 강조되고 국가의 연대감이 극적으로 강조될 때, 그 이념적 토대와 현실적 필요는 국가가 처한 환경과 기능에 의해서 달리 적용되어야 하며, 축구를 통한 국가주의에 대한 일시적인 정서적 통합보다는 지속적인 사회적 통합이 가능 할 수 있어야 한다. 또한 그 동안 국가주의에 희생되어 온 축구의 민족주의를 타파하고 정상적으로 축구팬들에게 축구가 관람과 참여의 스포츠로서 국민들의 삶의 질을 높이는데 이바지 할 수 있는 '스포츠문화'로서의 역할을 하도록 해야 한다.
Abstract
Since the development of modern sports, sports have played a role as not only a means for spreading a nation's ideology but also a tool for forming nationalism, contributing to the formation of the identity of the nation. When we consider the Korean society's innate nationalistic structure, control and governance of soccer have had a constant reinforcing correlation with nationalism since modernization. In the time of the 2002 World Cup Korean/Japan, a nation as a imagined community promoted by the nation has brought the nation's identity by making millions of people be mobilized through soccer as a mediator for the formation of national consciousness and nationalism. However, there is also concern that the extreme nationalism of the Koreans toward the national soccer team becomes exclusive nationalism driven by focus on soccer plays as a mediator for concentrating national energy. If focusing on nationalism for forming the identity of the nation, exclusive emotions toward other nations could appear in the process. Accordingly when the victory and defeat of the Korean soccer team are emphasized and also the feeling of solidarity of the country is over-stressed, ideological foundation and realistic necessity for it should be applied in various ways according to environments and functions the country are faced with and need. In other words, rather than temporary integration into nationalism through soccer, continuous overall social integration should be possible, and in light of this we should abolish the nationalism of soccer forced by ideology and pave the way to make soccer fans change their perceptions of sports namely soccer as from a tool for showing nationalism to a form of culture they can enjoy.
