Abstract

This study examines the stability of party politics as a critical requirement for sustainable democracy in the face of rising populist right-wing mobilization. To control for other conditions, the study focuses on three Scandinavian countries—Denmark, Sweden, and Norway—that share geographic proximity, electoral systems, and similarities in party politics, and where populist sentiments are low while support for right-wing populist parties is moderate or higher. Through a comparative analysis of these cases, the research evaluates the stability of party politics as a condition for sustainable democracy. Quantitative (the effective number of parties, cabinet stability) and qualitative (party positions on immigration, dynamics of inter-party relations) assessments of party political stability in the three countries since the rise of right-wing populist parties in the 2000s reveal that party politics in all three nations has remained stable. Sweden and Norway show relatively higher stability, whereas Denmark exhibits a tendency toward weakened stability. Sweden and Norway show relatively higher stability, whereas Denmark tends to exhibit somewhat weaker stability. When controlling for the influence of Denmark’s electoral system, which allows for greater access for new parties to enter parliament, the normalization of right-wing populist parties, their participation in coalition governments, or their provision of government support leads to increased stability. This is achieved as established parties partially adopt restrictive immigration policies and the radicalism of right-wing populist parties diminishes.
