Abstract

This article investigates the continuity and change of the Nordic political party systems. Since the 1990s, Nordic party systems have shown postmodern changes along with traditional legacy of modern party systems such as ideological and central-local cleavage and the importance of peasant party as a central political player. While rising of the right wing populist parties has increased the number of effective political parties, reorganized electoral coalitions, and changed party-voter alignment, these changes has been moderated by consociational legacy in their parliaments and interactions among political parties. Nordic party system has been known for their ideological cleavages and persistence of left-right-axis based regime changes. This articles, however, suggests that the current changes in ideological distance between parties, regime shifts, and party-voter alignment clearly influenced by the substantiality of populist rights and their participation in coalitions and radicalization of anti-immigrant/nationalistic politics. The Nordic party systems still lies in a transitional period in which gradual changes occur in the modern institutional framework.
