본 연구의 목적은 프랑스 극우정당인 국민연합(RN)의 정치적 영향력이 확장되고 있음에도, 대통령 배출 및 의회 내 제1정당 등극에 실패하는 이유를 추적하는 데 있다. 본 연구는 프랑스 현실 정치 과정에서 ‘공화국 전선(Republican Front)’, 다시 말해 경쟁하는 정치 세력 간에 연대하여 극우정당의 대통령 당선 및 의회 내 제1정당 등극을 가로막는 정치문화가 작동하고 있다는 점에 주목하고, 공화국 전선이라는 면역 기제가 존재하는 한 극우정치 세력인 국민연합이 정치권력의 중심에 진입하기 어려울 것이라는 점을 강조한다. 아울러 통일된 개념으로 정의되어 있지 않은 공화국 전선의 작동 방식을 규명함과 동시에 공화국 전선이 제4공화국 시절이었던 1955년 이래 현재까지도 프랑스 민주주의를 수호하는 버팀목으로 기능하고 있음을 밝힌다. 이를 통해 프랑스 정치를 보다 폭넓게 이해하는 데 디딤돌을 놓고자 한다. 더 나아가, 민주적인 수단을 통해 반민주적인 정당으로부터 민주주의를 수호해 온 공화국 전선 연구에 집중함으로써 극우세력을 견제하기 위한 민주주의 방어 논리를 모색하는 데도 일조하고자 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine why France's far-right party, the Rassemblement National (RN), has been expanding its political influence yet has failed to win the presidency or secure the position of the leading party in the National Assembly. This study focuses on the functioning of the "Republican Front" in French politics—a political culture in which competing political parties unite to prevent the far right from attaining central political power. The study argues that as long as this immune mechanism known as the Republican Front continues to function as a political safeguard, it will be difficult for far-right parties like the RN to reach the center of political power. Furthermore, the study seeks to clarify the operational dynamics of the Republican Front, a concept that lacks a single unified definition, and demonstrates that, since its emergence in 1955 during the Fourth Republic, it has continued to safeguard French democracy. Through this analysis, the study aims to contribute to a broader understanding of French politics. By focusing on the Republican Front as a democratic mechanism that protects democracy from anti-democratic parties through democratic means, this study also offers insights for developing strategies to defend democracy against the rise of the far right.
