황춘밍(黃春明)의 <사요나라 짜이젠(莎喲娜啦, 再見)> 다시 읽기 — 주인공의 정체성을 중심으로

본 논문은 타이완의 주요 향토문학 작가 중의 하나로 꼽히는 황춘밍의 대표작 「사요나라 짜이젠」을 주인공의 정체성 문제에 주목하여 분석하였다. 1970년대 초반에 발표된 이 작품은 타이완 향토문학의 중요한 성과 중의 하나로 꼽힌다. 특히 이 작품은 일본 식민지 통치로부터 해방된 이후에도 여전히 일본의 경제적 침략과 외교적 압박으로 인해 완전히 식민 상태로부터 벗어나지 못한 타이완 사회를 통렬하게 비판하고 있어 수많은 타이완의 독자들과 평론가들로부터 높은 평가를 받으며 공감대를 형성해왔다. 하지만 본 논문은 작품 속에 등장하는 화자이자 주인공인 미스터 황(黃君)이라는 존재에 주목한다. 그는 작품 속의 화자로서 독자에게 끊임없이 단정적으로 자신이 성격에 대한 정보를 제공한다. 하지만 작품 속에 드러나는 그의 행동들은 미스터 황이 스스로에게 부여한 정체성과 달리 매우 모호한 정체성을 가진 존재로서 미스터 황을 보여주고 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 불일치의 정체와 그 맥락을 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저 텍스트 속에서 등장인물들이 타이완의 여러 지역을 이동하는 노선이 눈에 띄는데, 그 노선을 추적하는 과정 속에서 미스터 황의 모호한 민족적 정체성을 포착해본다. 그리고 매춘 관광에 연루되면서 미스터 황이 드러내는 모호한 젠더적 정체성을 살펴보고, 그 의미를 분석하고자 한다. 그 결과 주인공이 소설 속에서 드러내 보이는 내적 갈등과 일견 모순적인 행동 등이 실은 그의 정체성 문제와 연결되어 있음을 설명하고자 하였다. 그의 애매모호한 정체성 문제는 크게 두 가지 점에서 문제적인데, 하나는 그가 동일시하는 민족의 개념이 무엇인가 하는 것이고, 또 하나는 젠더적인 측면에서 그가 일본인들과 묘하게 동일시되는 지점이 드러난다는 것이다.
Abstract
This paper made an analysis of Huang Chunming’s representative work “Sayonara Zaijian,” by paying attention to the identity problem of the main character. The work, published in the early 1970s, is considered one of the most important achievements of Taiwan’s Nativist Literature. In particular, the work has been highly praised and shared by Taiwan’s readers and critics as it bitterly criticizes Taiwan’s society for still being colonized by Japan’s economic aggression and diplomatic pressure even after its liberation from Japanese colonial rule. This paper pays attention to the existence of Mr. Huang, the narrator and main character in the work. As the narrator in the work, he constantly informs the reader about his personality. However, unlike his self-explanation, his actions in the work show him as a very vague identity. This paper tries to examine the stagnation and context of these discrepancies. First, the paper focuses on the travel route of the characters through Taiwan. And it looks at the ambiguous gender identity Mr. Huang reveals as he gets involved in prostitution tourism. As a result, the internal conflict of Mr. Huang is actually linked to his identity problems. His ambiguous identity problem is largely problematic in two respects: one is the problem of the nationality that he identifies with. And the other is, from the perspective gender, he gets identied with the Japanese tourists.
