초록

Children’s stories by Huang Chunming contain the process of characters overcoming the confusion they feel about self-identity, of regaining self-esteem, and of searching for the self in the society. Though he approached children’s literature with the sense of duty to “save the children,” and thus unavoidably shows traces of enlightenment tendencies, the illustrations he creates employing collage techniques demonstrate postmodern elements as well. Therefore, we find a sense that the modern and the postmodern are combined in his illustrated children’s stories. Huang Chunming’s illustration uses mainly scraps of newspapers, magazines, and advertisement fliers. Diverse meanings of the fragments of paper in the original contexts encounter the narrative situations in his story, and that results in the creation of new, humorous spaces of meaning. Emotions of the characters difficult to trace through words are revealed in the collage illustration, and we see occasionally direct intervention by the author in the pictures. The author expects the readers to find such elements by their own initiatives. Such a reading could add a sense of humor to Huang Chunming’s children’s literature, and enable them to do a complex, multi-layered interpretation.
