This study explores the intratextuality of yuefu poems sharing identical titles and themes, which served as a strategic mechanism to both uphold and challenge the authority of previous texts. By exploring the dynamics between competing voices in different versions of “Kuhanxing” in China and Korea, this research presents yuefu poetry not as a mere succession of imitations leading to a linear historical development with one original and its replicas, but rather as a trans-temporal and cultural network that thrives on the interactions between distinct authorial voices, all vying for cultural dominance. Consequently, this paper makes a contribution to providing a more comprehensive portrayal of the multi-layered identity and functions of yuefu poetry by illuminating the individual authors’ voices concealed behind the conventional poetic persona of yuefu.
Abstract
