Abstract
This study examines the diachronic development of the dual function of the Chinese motion verb Zou(走) as both a manner verb and a path verb, based on Talmy’s motion event frame. The analysis reveals that this dual function evolved through the gradual loss of [Path], followed by [Manner], both of which are key components in motion events. During the period from Old Chinese to Middle Chinese, the loss of [Path] occurred. In the Pre-Qin period, Zou(走) encoded both [Manner<foot-progression>, <high speed>] and [Path<deictic, vector>]. During the Han dynasty, the loss of <vector> resulted in a semantic shift to ‘run away’. The subsequent loss of <deictic> further led to a meaning shift to ‘run’. In Early Modern Chinese, the loss of [Manner] led to two distinct semantic developments. In the case of ‘run’, the disappearance of <high speed> resulted in a shift to ‘walk’. For ‘run away’, the successive loss of both <high speed> and <foot-progression> led to a semantic shift to ‘go away’. After acquiring the meaning of ‘go away’, Zou(走) began to be used syntactically in existential constructions. This study contributes to our understanding of Chinese motion verbs by elucidating the specific processes through which Zou(走) developed its dual function as both a manner and a path verb. Furthermore, it provides insights into the lexicalization patterns of Chinese motion verbs and the formation mechanisms of existential constructions.
