Abstract

When 『Yeoljosijip』(a collection of poems) compiled by Gyeomik Jeon and collection of his writings introduced, Literati of the late Joseon dynasty paid a lot of attention to him and his literature. Despite that, studies performed in Korea to date have been focused on the literary theory and critical theory of Gyeomik Jeon. Therefore, the paper elucidated the interests and meanings that the literati of the late Joseon era exhibited to the Gyeomik Jeon’s poetry to more specifically review the way that Gyeomik Jeon’s literature had been accepted in the late Joseon era. The summary of the contents shall be as follows. First, the extend of interests of the late Joseon literati in Gyeomik Jeon’s poetry was shown to be different between periods/ Late 17th century to early 18th century was the period showing the just emergence of the intersests in Gyeomik Jeon’s poetry. In late 18th century to early 19th century, the works of Gyeomik Jeon were widely distributed and understanding level of Gyeomik Jeon’s poetry was increased with widespread interests in him. In late 19th century, the interests in Gyeomik Jeon’s poetry became reduced than in the previous periods, but interests in his poetry still persist across the country. Second, interests of the late Joseon literati in Gyeomik Jeon’s poetry exhibited the diverse disposition depending on the literati. The evaluation by literati of the late Joseon era on the Gyeomik Jeon’s poetry had been underway intricately entangled with likes and dislikes for the figures. That is, sometimes dislikes for Gyeomik Jeon’s behaviors led to contempt for his works and sometimes his works were accepted separately from the evaluation of what he was or comported. This suggests the following two points in the history of literature. One is that the poems of Gyeomik Jeon had the aesthetic qualities and charms to make it difficult to be disregarded only because of the negative evaluation of his characters. The other is that the attitudes of the literati of the late Joseon era toward the poetry of the late Ming dynasty to the early Qing dynasty were sufficiently flexible not to be dominated by a particular evaluation. Third, the literati of the late Joseon era perceived the aesthetic qualities rather accurately and specifically. Especially, interests of the late Joseon literati in Gyeomik Jeon’s poetry had been underway deeply and widely from the aesthetic qualities of the individual works to the literary value of the whole pieces.
