Abstract
Are you more attracted to price discount rates or limited sales volume when purchasing products at a limited discount sale event? This choice can be easily observed in everyday life, in particular, limited discount sale events are frequently used in social commerce and mobile shopping, which is rapidly growing in recent years and became a very important issue in practice. In addition, from the standpoint of the corporation, the limited discount sale event is costly. Therefore, marketers who plan and execute the limited discount sale event, in order to optimize the utility to the consumer, need a strategic guideline on whether a limited discount sale event should be implemented or a limited sales volume should be implemented. Nevertheless, previous researches on limited discount sale events merely address the rare value of the product itself, so there is still a limit to explaining the effect of scarcity messages accompanied by price discounts, such as limited discount sale events. In this study, we investigate which consumers are paying attention to the discount rate, which consumers are interested in the limited quantity of sales. Two experiments were conducted focusing on the moderating effects of both the chronic regulatory focus and the mind-set The results of the study are as follows. As a result of examining the moderating effects between the discount rate and the limited sales volume, the consumers of the promotion focus tend to prefer the higher discount rate, whereas the consumers of the prevention focus prefer a limited discount sale event with a limited sales volume though the price discount rate is low. As a result of examining the moderating effects of mind-set between the discount rate and the limited sales volume, consumers with abstract mind-set prefer the higher discount rate whereas consumers with a specific mind-set prefer a limited discount sale event with a limited sales volume even if the price discount rate is low. The results of this study show that the preferred limited discount sale event can be different according to the customer's chronic regulatory focus and mind-set. In other words, consumers with a promotion focus and an abstract mind-set prefer ideality rather than feasibility of the alternative, so they prefer a limited discount sale event with a higher price discount rate even though the expected utility is the same. However, consumers with a prevention focus and a specific mind-set prefer the feasibility rather than the ideality of the alternative, so they prefer a limited discount sale event with a limited sales volume rather than a high discount rate even though the expected utility is the same. The results of this study provide important strategic guidelines for utility optimization in planning and executing limited discount sale events for marketing and promotion.
