Abstract
In order to shed new light on the mixed results regarding the comparative advantage of time- limited and quantity-limited messages, the authors propose consumers’ regulatory focus as a potential moderator that determines conditions in which each type of limited messages would perform better in the discount contexts. That is, prevention focus has fit with time-limited discounts which are characterized by a higher level of feasibility and perceived control, whereas promotion focus possesses fit with quantity-limited discounts which are perceived to offer greater value and desirability. Moreover, if consumers experience difficulty or disfluency in processing the price information, they would undergo more systematic and analytical processing and thus modify their initial judgments, which will result in changes to the effects of regulatory fit proposed in the fluent processing conditions. In the experiment, prevention-focused participants showed higher purchase intentions of the product that offered a time-limited discount, whereas promotion-focused participants displayed higher purchase intentions toward the product with a quantity-limited discount. In addition, the interaction effect on purchase intentions were found to be mediated by emotions, induced by regulatory fit, that participants experienced when exposed to the discount promotion. However, when the price information was disfluent to process, both prevention-focused and promotion-focused participants revealed opposite patterns of responses compared to those observed in the fluent conditions. This research contributes to the literature on limited or scarcity messages, regulatory focus and fit, and processing fluency and provides useful guidelines to design and implement effective limited-message and discount strategies.
