The Search for the Road of Civilization Nation in the 21st Century China: In Case of Confucius and the Dream of the Great Equal Society

This article is written to explore the road of civilization nation in 21st century China through the Confucius and the dream of the great equal society. The concept of the Great Equal Society first appears in the Book of Rites, a Confucian classic which is said to have been compiled by Confucius. This is the vision of Confucian utopia, which one may define as “a society where public-mindedness prevails over selfishness.” The leadership is honest and competent. People have deeply ingrained habits of looking beyond their narrow self-interest. As such, the society is filled with mutual trust and goodwill, evidenced by the fact that people routinely leave their doors unlocked. Our goal is therefore not only to rejuvenate Confucianism or China but also to formulate a new social vision, based on a creative reinterpretation of Confucianism, to address the common problems which modernity poses for humanity.
