초록

The so-called ‘revolutionary romanticism,’ which was an influential phenomenon in Chinese left-wing literary circles during the mid-to-late 1920s, was a firm estate on a broad emotional foundation that cannot be devalued just for the reason of its distortion of realities. In this ‘era of agony’ with the pervasive ‘indecisiveness,’ hesitation, and anguish, every youth who followed the values of the revolution became fascinated by ‘romanticism.’ Mainstream literary critics of the time had called attention to ‘romanticism,’ but they failed to bring up a satisfactory answer to the question of the necessity of ‘romance.’ It was because the implication of this term stayed out of the limelight as they emphasized the change of political rationale and the peculiarity of the left-wing literature. What was ‘romance’ to the youth, and how can it come together with the zeitgeist of ‘revolution?’ This study tries to offer an answer to those questions through the course of investigating the narratives by Jiang Guangci. The methodology taken in this study is to ‘reread’ the narrative tensions and unrevealed gaps, instead of conforming to the existing readings. I believe this methodology would shed new light on Chinese left-wing literature, let alone on Jiang Guangci's.
