초록

The article, by analyzing the The Short Story Magazine’s 1921 proclamation of research and translation of world literature as the core innovation, as a single event, attempts to define the rich context of actors and characteristics of space of the 5ㆍ4 new literature field. In such context, the article analyzed the problem of ‘social reconstruction’ which strives to restructure the regime of the heart through a fundamental restoration of morality and ethics, and new social relations, in the context of policy changes in the literature field before and after 5ㆍ4, and the recognition, emotion, and willingness that operates upon the imagination of various reconstruction of urban communities. The big and small urban communities that focused on ‘social reconstruction,’ had relieved themselves from the vulgarized evolutionary theory’s obsession on selection, and promoted a new strength of the human mind through ‘self-consciousness’ and ‘solidarity,’ based on the morality of ‘helping each other,’ and have tried to change the mindly regime through new reading experience involving mutual reading and discussions. In particular, The Research Association of Literature, which had deep relations with The Short Story Magazine, had raised the issue of ‘reading’ the world that everyone was facing and empathizing with others’ pain, in the process of discussing upon reading a novel. If original novels had blocked any confrontation with others in a painstaking condition, through the usual confucian moral sentiment and form, the new way of reading novels had encouraged proactive reading of the world and confrontation of others. The reformed 1921 version of The Short Story Magazine’s ‘Research and Translation of World Literature’ had set a milestone for them to realize the unfair elements of their life, society, and the world, and discuss upon the new novel-reading and critique, which led to a new promotion of the regime of the Heart during the 5ㆍ4, effecting the building of social relations based on horizontal solidarity.
