Abstract
The current research investigated the effects of message framing on health promotion advertising. First, we assumed that consumers’ intention to improve their health is higher when the health benefits or losses are presented by integrated framing. Consumers probably consider that the separated health benefits or losses have very trivial impact on their health. Second, we expected that individuals’ willingness to improve their health is influenced by message type (gain or loss) and unit. In addition, we assumed that this interaction effect is mediated by consumers’ construal level. Across two laboratory experiments, the results showed that consumers’ intention of using stairs is higher in the integrated (vs. separated) framing condition regardless of message type. Also, loss (vs. gain) type message is more effective to induce consumers’ health promotion behavior. Furthermore, when gain message is presented, consumers' intention to improve their health is higher in the large unit (e.g., minute) condition. In contrast, when loss message is presented, consumers’ intention is higher in the small unit (e.g., second) condition. Consumers’ construal level mediated the interaction effect between message type (gain or loss) and unit. We provide implications for conducting public campaigns and designing communication messages that can effectively induce consumers’ health promotion behavior.
