이 서평 논문은 류칭(Liu Qing)의 저서 『The Liberal Question』을 다룬다. 이 책에서 류칭은 중국에서 자유주의의 역할을 옹호하며, 자유주의가 중국이라는 맥락 속에서도 여전히 의미 있는 역할을 할 수 있다고 주장했다. 자유민주주의가 깊이 뿌리내린 한국의 시각에서 볼 때, 류칭의 이러한 주장은 익숙하고 심지어 자연스럽게 들릴 수도 있다. 그러나 이 책이 출간된 지 이미 7~8년이 지난 지금, 현재의 세계 정세를 고려할 때 류칭의 자유주의 옹호는 여전히 유효한 것일까? 본 논문은 먼저 류칭의 주요 주장을 개관한 뒤, 오늘날 자유민주주의가 직면한 위기를 중심으로 그의 관점을 비판적으로 검토하고자 한다. 20세기 말까지 전 세계적으로 널리 영향을 끼친 자유주의는, 21세기에 들어 심각한 위기에 직면해 있다. 이 위기는 단순히 정치적·제도적인 차원에 그치지 않고, 자유주의 사상의 핵심인 ‘이성적 주체’의 붕괴라는 보다 근본적인 원인에서 비롯된다. 이러한 근본적 위기 속에서, 중국 자유주의는 과연 생존할 수 있을까? 만약 그렇지 않다면, 중국 내부에서 새로운 정치 원리는 어떤 징후로 출현하고 있는가? 본 서평 논문은 이러한 물음들에 대한 예비적인 탐색을 시도하려 한다.
Abstract
This review essay examines Liu Qing’s book The Liberal Question. In this work, Liu defends the role of liberalism in China and argues that liberalism can still play a meaningful role in the Chinese context. From the perspective of South Korea, where liberal democracy is deeply rooted, Liu’s argument may appear familiar and even natural. However, nearly seven to eight years have passed since the publication of Liu Qing’s book, and one must ask: in light of the current global developments, is Liu’s defense of liberalism still valid? This essay first outlines the main arguments of Liu Qing’s book, then critically examines his perspective through the lens of the ongoing crisis of liberalism - particularly the challenges faced by liberal democracy today. Liberalism, which enjoyed widespread global influence especially towards the end of the 20th century, now faces a serious crisis in the 21st century. This crisis is not merely political or institutional but stems from a more fundamental source: the erosion of the rational subject that forms the core of liberal thought. In the face of such a foundational crisis, can Chinese liberalism survive? And if not, what are the early signs of a new political principle emerging from within China? This review essay seeks to offer a preliminary exploration of these questions.
