Abstract
This study explores the possibility of developing effective methods and tools for learning classical Sino-Korean literature, focusing on characters assigned in the Chinese Character Proficiency Test (CCPT). The CCPT is a certified qualification system that assesses an individual's understanding and application of Chinese characters. It provides systematic learning objectives by grade level and has become an essential component of classical Chinese education. This research digitized the grade-specific character data used in the CCPT and proposed methods for effectively studying primary classical Chinese texts such as the Four Books and Three Classics. In the initial stage, character data were organized into a database, and an analytical method for classical Chinese texts was developed based on this database. An analysis of the relationship between the characters included in the original texts of the Analects, Great Learning, Mencius, and Doctrine of the Mean and the CCPT grade levels revealed that over 90% of the key characters in these texts were covered by the test-assigned characters. The proposed learning tool provides intuitive information on character pronunciation, radicals, stroke counts, and grade levels. It was designed to allow users to instantly access the required information through mouse-over or click interactions. This enables learners to efficiently study the characters within classical texts and systematically comprehend their content. For instance, variations like ‘樂’, ‘楽’, and ‘乐’—which share the same meaning—are treated differently depending on their Unicode code points. By resolving such challenges, the learning tool extends beyond mere character study to interdisciplinary applications, such as analyzing traditional Korean music, exemplified by the Hwanghakru sijo performance. In conclusion, the proposed learning tool enhances the efficiency of classical Chinese studies and presents a new paradigm for character learning. However, the database in this study is limited to the CCPT-assigned characters, excluding rare characters found in some ancient documents. Future research aims to include various character variants, such as simplified and alternative forms, and to add a thesaurus-based character processing function, thereby developing a more comprehensive learning tool. Such a tool will be a valuable resource not only for students specializing in classical Chinese but also for educators and researchers in diverse fields.
