Abstract
Cha Cheon-ro(車天輅, 1556–1615), a representative poet of the mid-Joseon period, is also known as the author of the Korean Gasa(歌辭) works Ganghobyeolgok and Gangchonbyeolgok. The prevailing view is that Ganghobyeolgok was written during his later years when he was in seclusion in Iksan(益山), Jeolla-do(全羅道), after facing political persecution. However, historical records such as the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄) suggest that Cha was not a figure of significant political status during his lifetime and that he remained active in Seoul even in his later years, making it difficult to conclude that he lived in prolonged seclusion in Iksan. Moreover, there is insufficient documentary evidence to definitively attribute Gangchonbyeolgok to him. The portrayal of Cha as a persecuted loyalist and the association of Gangchonbyeolgok with this image were largely influenced by the Yeonan Cha clan(延安車氏)’s efforts to enhance their family’s prestige. In particular, Cha Ik-gyo(車益敎), the head of the clan association, played a central role in promoting research, publications, and cultural projects related to Cha Cheon-ro from the 1980s onward. His writings were the first to claim that Cha lived in seclusion in Iksan and authored Gangchonbyeolgok. Over time, his views became the accepted narrative within the Yeonan Cha clan and were further reinforced by local government projects that sought to develop cultural heritage related to Cha. This process led to the widespread public perception of Cha’s life and eventually influenced Korean literary studies, shaping the discourse on the authorship and historical background of Gangchonbyeolgok.
