종교와 종교성 그리고 정치적 태도 불교, 개신교, 천주교를 중심으로

초록

본 논문은 불교, 개신교, 천주교를 중심으로 종교유형과 종교성의 차이가 정치적 태도에 영향을 주는지 살펴보았다. 종교인들이 비종교인들보다 보수적인 정치태도를 보이고, 불교와 개신교가 천주교와 무종교집단에 비해 더 보수적인 정치태도를 보여 종교 소속이 정치적 태도와 관계가 있음을 확인했다. 종교적 소속이 동일한 경우, 다른 종교성 변수들의 정치적 태도에 대한 영향에서 종교 간 차이가 존재했다. 의례적 종교 활동, 비의례적 종교 활동, 종교적 신념, 종교적 몰입의 네 가지 종교성 변수들의 정치적 태도에 대한 효과가 개신교와 천주교에서 뚜렷했고 불교에서 가장 약했다. 불교 집단의 종교성 요인들은 보수적 정치태도와 연결되었다. 이러한 결과는 이명박 정부시기에 두드러졌던 불교와 정부의 충돌은 종교간 경쟁에서 정부를 견인하고자 하는 불교 상층부 차원에 국한된 정치적 태도 변화임을 시사한다. 개신교 집단의 종교성 요인들은 주로 보수적 정치태도에 효력을 보였다. 특히 성직자들의 영향을 반영하는 의례 참여의 보수적 효과가 두드러졌다. 천주교 집단은 의례 참여와 비의례적 활동, 종교적 신념이 정치적 태도에 양면적인 효과를 나타내어, 결과적으로 온건 비판의 정치적 태도를 드러내고 있다.

Abstract

This article examines how the differences of religious affiliation and factors of religiosity influence political attitudes focused on Buddhists, Protestants and Catholics. Believers have more conservative attitudes than non- believers. Buddhists and Protestants are more conservative than Catholics. These results confirm religious affiliation is related with political attitudes. In the case of same religious affiliation, the effects of religiosity on political attitudes have the discrepancies among three religions. The effects of religiosity variables are apparent in Protestants and Catholics and the effects of them are comparatively weak in Buddhists. The religiosity variable in Buddhists is linked to conservative political attitudes. This suggests that the conflicts between Buddhists and Lee government came into view only in the level of the leaders’ tactics for more government’s support. Religiosity variables in Protestants are almost related to conservative attitudes. Especially, ritual activities linked to influence of the clergymen on believers are consistently involved in conservative attitudes. Religiosity variables in Catholics show contradictory effects on political attitudes. Those phenomenon make Catholics keep appropriate distance for political critics.
