본고는 대통령 선거를 중심으로 정치에서의 종교의 역할과 의미를 고찰하기 위해 시도된 것이다. 미군정, 이승만 정권에서부터 유신 정권까지는 종교에 대한 분할과 통제를 통한 정교유착이, 3공에서 5공까지는 정치의 종교조종과 종교지도자들의 민주화운동을 통한 정교대립이 드러났다. 민주화 이후 종교는 더 이상 정치의 조종 대상이 아니면서 오히려 정치에 대한 불만을 집단적으로 제기했다. 종교와 정치의 관계를 정치의 종교 활용과 종교의 정치세력화로 나누어 볼 때 이 둘이서로 만나는 지점에 선거가 있다. 우리나라 대통령 선거에서 유권자들의 투표 결정에 종교가 고려 대상 중 하나라는 보고는 나와 있지 않으나 입후보자들은 자신들의 종교를 드러내지 않고 모든 종교에 친화력을 보여주기 위해 노력한다. 이것은 타종교로부터 받을 불이익에 대한 우려 때문일 수도 있으나 무엇보다 본질적으로 종교 자체의 세속화에 기인한 것으로, 현대사회에서 종교는 신앙의 주관적인경험을 통해 하나의 선택으로 변화되고 있는 것이다. 문제는 입후보자가 그들이믿는 종교의 가치와 이념을 줄기세포와 같은 종교적이면서 정치사회적인 이슈에반영하려는 노력을 하지 않는다는 데에 있다. 종교는 하나의 거대권력으로 정치판에 끼어들기보다는 종교적 가치가 정치를 정화하고 그 지향점을 확실히 하는 데에기여할 수 있어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
This article examines the relationship of religion and politics focusing on the presidential election in Korea. U.S. Military and Syngman Rhee's governments as well as the Third Republic were the times of alliance of religion and politics by means of political control over religion. From the Third to the Fifth Republic the relation between religion and politics showed two types: the one political regulation over religion, and the other confrontation of religion and politics such as democratization movement by religious leaders. Since the democratization has been achieved, religion was no more under the political dominance and it was rather the time that complaints against the politics were collectively raised by religion side. If the relation between religion and politics could be summed up as the political use and empowerment of religion, election lies in the very meeting point of these two aspects. It has been reported that there is no ‘religious vote', meaning that religion enters into the choice voting for or against candidates, but most of the candidates try to show an affinity with all major religions. This reflects above all the secularization of religion itself, in a sense that belief in Transcendent Being in modern society has been changed into one option among others through the subjective experience of believing. What matters, however, is that the candidates are not willing to reflect the religious values and principles on the politico-social issues such as stem cells because they need the support from the religious circles. Rather than participating in political world as grand power; religious value should contribute to purify politics and ensure its direction.
