본 논문은 종교가 지지후보와 투표행동에 영향을 미치는 요인인지와 종교에 따라 최종적인 선택후보에 있어서 의미 있는 차이가 존재하는지에 관심을 갖는다. 기존의 연구들과는 달리 투표행동에 있어서 전통적으로 중요했던 사회경제적 변수들을 통제함으로써 종교의 독립적 효과를 엄밀하게 검증했고 특히 실제 투표선택과의 관계에서 종교의 영향력이 어떻게 발휘되는지 파악했다. 지난 2012년 제18대 대통령선거에서의 유권자 패널조사 결과를 분석한 결과, 종교 별로 최종적인 선택후보에 의미있는 차이가 존재했던 것으로 나타났다. 불교신자는 박근혜 후보를 더 선택하는 보수적 경향성을, 천주교신자와 무종교인은 문재인 후보를 더 선택하는 진보적 경향성을 뚜렷이 표출했다. 종교가 기타 사회경제적 변수들을 통제한 상태에서도 여전히 유효한 독립적 효과를 갖는 것으로 나타나 정치적 선택의 균열요소로서 잠재적 가능성을 갖고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 종교 간 최종선택의 차이가 어디서 기인하는지에 대한 심층적 탐색과 더불어 건강한 정치과정과 운영에 종교가 기여할 수 있는 지점에 대한 진지한 고민이 필요한 시점이다.
Abstract
This paper examines whether religion is an influential factor on voting behavior and where there is significant difference in the final candidate choice by religion. As a distinctive approach from the existing research, this paper verifies strictly the individual effect of religion by controlling socio-economic variables which have been traditionally important in voting behavior in Korea. Especially, this paper tries to understand the influential power of religion which works in people’s actual voting choice. As a result of analyzing the panel survey data for the 18th Korean Presidential election in 2012, there was a evident difference in the final candidate choice by religion. Buddhists tended to choose relatively more a conservative candidate, Keun-hye Park whereas Catholics and no religion people tended to choose relatively more a progressive candidate, Jae-in Moon. Considering religion factor possesses an individual effect even with controlling other socio-economic variables, it can be said to have a latent possibility as a new important cleavage factor in people’s political choice. For further study, it is necessary to conduct in-depth analysis of where the different choices by religion originate from and now seems to be the time for serious consideration on how religion can contribute sound political process and operation.
