Abstract
Which voters support and oppose a religious tax? What religious characteristics influence the attitude toward religious tax among Protestants? Considering the strong influence of Protestants on the legislative process of the religious tax bill, an in-depth analysis of religious tax attitudes is required for non-religious and Protestant voters. However, little research empirically analyzes voters’ attitudes toward religious tax. Accordingly, this study used data from the “2019 Protestant Perception Survey on Major Social Issues” conducted by the Korea Christian Institute for Social Affairs to analyze factors affecting voters’ attitudes toward religious tax. The main analysis results of the study are as follows. First, the higher the voter’s education level and income level, the more likely they are to support the religious tax. Second, compared to voters with no religious affiliation, Protestants, Catholics, and other religions were more likely to oppose the religious tax. Third, as a result of analyzing a sample of Protestants by adding religious factors, Protestants with a higher degree of church attendance and faith are more likely to oppose the religious tax. On the other hand, Protestants who attended large churches were more likely to agree to the religious tax. Lastly, regarding the moderating effect of the degree of church attendance and church size, as the size of the church increases, the likelihood of supporting religious tax increases, regardless of the degree of church attendance. However, the smaller the church size, the more likely it is to oppose the religious tax as the degree of church attendance increases. Through analyses, this study revealed that individual religious beliefs are expressed as political attitudes beyond the reference point of individual behavior. It is significant in that it examines how voters respond to political issues involving their interests in religion.
