Abstract
This paper is a preliminary discussion of an educational revolution aimed at nurturing citizens who can realize the vision of “New Republicanism.” The New Republicanism system, characterized by collective governance through consensus and deliberation among societal members grounded in non-dominant freedom, places the role of education in cultivating citizens with the necessary attitudes, values, and capabilities at its core. Therefore, this paper explores what the New Republicanism educational revolution should aim for in our current educational reality dominated by hyper-competitive neoliberal culture, and how we can chart a path toward it given our current educational environment. The structure of this paper is as follows. First, as a foundational task for the new republican educational revolution, we critically examined the neoliberal educational culture that dominates our current educational reality and discussed the meaning and direction of new republican citizenship education. Second, we critically analyzed and reviewed the basic premises for the new republican educational revolution based on the educational reality of Korean society. Third, as core institutional reform tasks enabling a new republican educational revolution, the most urgent educational system reform measures for our society today are presented, centered on 1) the abolition of relative evaluation and 2) the reorganization of teacher (training) education. Finally, we discussed how the new republican educational revolution could serve as an alternative to overcome the era of educational decline and usher in a new educational paradigm shift, considering the rapidly changing social environment and the reality of Korean education.
