미술사에 전개되는 작품은 서술된 시기의 관점에 따라 정의된 것으로서 보는 관점의 변화에 의거한 새로운 의미를 보여주는 열린 텍스트로서 부단한 재해석이 필요하다. 본고는 이와 같은 취지에서 샤갈(Marc Chagall, 1887-1985)의 작품에 관한 새로운 해석을 시도하고자 한다. 추상이 대세였던 20세기 전반부에 구상으로 일관한 그의 작품은 현대미술사에서는 주변적 위치를 차지한다. 따라서 인간의 본원적 감정으로 여겨지는 향수, 사랑 등을 환상적으로 표현한 그의 작품들은 신비화된 서정적 공명 혹은 융의 이론과 관련한 집단무의식의 표상 정도로 인식되면서 변증법적 논의가 불가능한 선언적 서술이거나 정신분석이론을 정당화하기 위하여 도식화에 갇히는 한계를 갖는다. 이에 본고에서는 회귀적 경향을 주 내용으로 하는 샤갈의 회화가 사회적 근대의 타자적 증언으로서 근대를 대표하는 미적 담지체라는 가정 아래 문화적 모더니티의 참조체계로 분석하고자한다. 연구방법은 사회학에서 근대를 성찰하는 연구주제인 문화적 모더니티의 개념을 적용하여 샤갈의 회화를 분석한다. 이론적 배경으로서 문화적 모더니티의 개념을 정의한 후 샤갈회화의 특성인 동시에 문화적 모더니티의 증후들인 서정성, 환상, 회귀와 반복, 몽타주에 관하여 그 구조와 의미를 조망하고 이상의 이론을 배경으로 하여 샤갈의 작품을 분석한 후 결론을 도출한다. 이상의 논의는 샤갈회화의 문화적 모더니티로서 세상과 불화하는 타자성의 내용을 밝힐 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
Abstract
The art work deployed in the art history needs continuous reanalysis as opened text which shows new meanings according to the change of appreciating perspective. This paper tries new interpretation about the art work of Marc Chagall for this purpose. In early 20th centry, when abstraction art was a general trend, his work which was consistent with conception, occupies the peripheral state in the modern art history. Therefore even though his work which fantastically expressed the nostalgia, love of basic emotions of human is very popular, there are not much of deep art talks about his work. As his work which fantastically expressed the nostalgia, love of basic emotions has been perceived as expression of group unconsciousness related with Jung's theory or mysterious emotional resonance, it has a limit of being locked in a diagraming in order to justify the declaratory narration or mental analysis theory which dialectical discussion is impossible. Thus this paper is to analyze the reference system of cultural modernity under the assumption that Chagall's painting which mainly contains recurrently tendency, is the artistic element representing modernity as outside testimony of social modernity.The method of study analyzes the Chagall's painting applying the cultural modernity notion which is the study topic reprosecuting the modernity. After defining the cultural modernity notion as theoretical background, this observes the structure and meaning about lyricism, fantasy, regression and repetition, montage which are the symptom of cultural modernity and the characteristic of Chagall's painting and extracts the conclusion after analyzing the work of Chagall with the background of above theory. Above discussion expects to light the contents of otherness discording in the world society of the cultural modernity of Chagall's painting .
