Abstract

Messages for communication are of course recognized as texts as the communication can be made without regard to the type of element: visual, auditory, or even a sense of taste, tough, or smell. However, the text analysis has been unfortunately limited to individual texts. It has been insufficient to examine the correlation between texts having different media, i.e. intertextuality. The intertextuality is a correlation between texts. What is important is that the correlation should not be just at the level of quotation, but the focus should be given how the latter text interpret the former text and create new meanings and forms. This study explored why the Marc Chagall pictures are loved in literature and how his pictures were interpreted in poems and novels to create new meanings and forms, in terms of intertextuality. In addition, an effort was made to identify the characteristics of pictures and languages and the difference and similarity between poems and novels. Texts were analyzed from a viewpoint of intertextuality to expand the scope of literature study into the level of culture. If the study of literature in the future is not to be limited to literary texts, but to include many different texts affecting it, the texts should be communicated socioculturally, and consideration should be given the communication mechanism at the level of culture by which the texts are produced, transmitted, and recognized. Under these circumstances, it may be expected to aesthetically identify even the mental base which forms each of the text.
