물질적 상상력의 4원소 개념을 통해 본 시적 이미지의 표현

이 연구는 시집 표지 디자인 과정에서 비롯된 디자이너의 체험에서 동기화된 것으로, 시집 표지 디자인에서 결과로 도출된 ‘시적 이미지’를 대상으로, 그것의 발현 과정에서 무엇이 작동하는지 밝히고 발현 결과인 이미지 표현에 대해 ‘상상력’ 개념을 적용하여 고찰한 것이다. 이를 통한 ‘시적 이미지 표현연구’의 저변 확대 측면에서 연구의 필요성을 갖는다. 연구의 목적은 이미지 표현에 대한 새로운 관점에서의 고찰을 시도하여, 그것을 후속 연구에서 디자인 및 이미지 표현 작업에 적용하는 시각적 실험의 기초적 토대로 삼고자 하는 것이다. 연구 방법에서 분석의 이론적 틀이 되는 것은 가스통 바슐라르(Gaston Bachelard)의 ‘상상력’ 개념이다. 시를 읽을 때 ‘시적 상상력’을 통하여 시인과 독자라는 두의식이 만나는데, 이 과정 중에 ‘울림’을 통해 디자이너만의 새로운 시적 이미지를 도출할 수 있게 된다. 즉, 주관적 상상계의 중요성에 대해 말한 바슐라르의 개념을 통해 디자이너만의 고유한 이미지 발현을 설명할 수 있으며, 그 결과인 표현에 대한 분석은 물질적 상상력의 4원소 개념인 ‘불, 물, 흙, 공기’를 적용하여 고찰할 수 있다. 그 근거는, 물질적 상상력이 근본적으로 ‘시’로부터의 상상력을 의미하는 것이며, 연구 대상인 시집의 표지 디자인 과정 중 도출된 이미지의 표현 과정과 결과에서 바슐라르의 4원소를 근간으로 한 물질적 상상력의 작용을 추정할 수 있는 시각적 단서를 발견했기 때문이다. 연구의 순서와 내용은, 2장에서 바슐라르의 상상력 개념에 대해 살펴보고, 이어 시적 이미지와 그것이발현된 매체인 시집 표지의 디자인에 대해 다룬 후, 4장에서 물질적 상상력의 4원소 개념을 적용하여시안 스케치 과정과 결과로 표출된 이미지를 종합한 ‘시집 표지에 드러난 시적 이미지 표현’에 대해고찰한다. 결과적으로, 바슐라르의 상상력 개념이 어떻게 시적 이미지 표현에 적용될 수 있는지 밝히고, 이와 같은 연구를 통해 이미지 표현 및 해석 방법론에 대한 지평을 넓히고자 한다.
Abstract
Motivated by the experience in designing the covers of poetry books, this study examines what happens in the manifestation of the poetic images that resulted from the cover design for poetry books and according to which theoretical background the expression of the images resulting from the manifestation can be interpreted. With this, the study aims to increase the expandability of the theoretically based research on the method for expressing poetic images, attempts to interpret the expression of images from a new perspective, and adopts this interpretation as a venue for visual experimentation by applying it to the actual design and image rendering during follow-up research. The theory that is applied to the study on the expression of poetic images is Gaston Bachelard’s concept of imagination. Poetry reading is like the encounter of two minds, those of the poet and the reader, through poetic imagination. In this process, a designer can identify a new unique poetic image through reverberation. In other words, the manifestation of a designer’s unique images can be explained by Bachelard’s concept that discussed the importance of the subjective imaginary order, and the expression of its results can be examined by applying the concept of the four elements of physical imagination. It is because physical imagination essentially means imagination from poetry, and the visual leads that are grounded in Bachelard’s four elements can conjecture the action of physical imagination that is discovered from the process and products of the expression of the images on the covers of the different poetry books that are subjects of the study.
