현대 조각에서 서정 표현에 관한 연구: 가스통 바슐라르의 상상력과 재료의 질감을 중심으로

Abstract

This study aims to explore methods of lyrical expression in sculpture through the imagination of Gaston Bachelard, viewing the images of objects with a new consciousness and based on materials, intuition, and improvisation. It also analyzes the differences in the mechanisms of empathy in sculpture compared to the experiences of lyricism in literature and painting, focusing on the creation of texture and the physical properties of materials (matière). Bachelard saw images and imagination not simply as reproductions of reality, but as the creation of a new reality. This stimulates emotions, revealing an individual's inner world and unconscious, and fostering empathy with others' inner emotions. The formation of this inner empathic exchange can be the onset of experiencing lyricism. Just as Bachelard saw space as familiar like an individual's home, filled with memories and emotions, lyricism emerges from the familiarity formed in inner empathic connections with others. In painting, lyrical abstraction attempted by a group of artists in the mid-20th century can be exemplified by the Informel, Tachisme, and Abstract Expressionism movements, which used spontaneity, effects like stains and blurs, and a variety of colors to compose the canvas. In sculpture, lyrical expression is not limited to the work itself but is greatly influenced by its location, space, materials, and texture. Therefore, considering the characteristics of the sculptural genre, the complexity of applying materials, tools, techniques, and locations poses challenges for lyrical expression. In this context, the paper presents four methods of texture expression using materials commonly used in sculpture, such as stone, metal, wood, and clay, based on Bachelard’s theory of imagination to capture a lyrical feeling. This research hopes to continue the exploration of lyrical expressions in sculpture by many artists, including the researcher.
