본 연구는 보편적인 시각 이미지의 영역 너머로 확장될 수 있는 물의 물질적 이미지들을 찾고 이를 도자라는 매체를 통하여 구현하기 위한 연구이다. 연구자는 우리 문화와 사고 안에지배적인 자리를 차지하고 있는 물에 대한 고정관념과 단편적인 이미지로부터 더 나아가 새로운 이미지를 그릴 수 있도록 하는 물의 물질적 상상력의 가능성에 주목하고자 한다. 물은 고정된 형태가 없는 유동적 물질로 존재하는 장소에 따라 그 형태가 변화한다. 이는사물의 외적 형태를 대상으로 하여 시각적으로 파악하는 형상적 이미지로 설명된다. 그러나이 형상적 이미지보다 더 깊은 곳으로부터 인식될 수 있는 물질적인 이미지가 존재한다. 이러한 물질적 이미지는 물질적 상상력에 의해 이끌어지는 것으로 이미지 대상의 물질성을 바탕으로 발현된다. 프랑스 철학자 가스통 바슐라르(Gaston Bachelard: 1884-1962)는 인간의 상상력이 근본적으로 물질적이라고 하며 우리에게 이미지를 제공해 주는 대상을 형태로서 파악하는 것이 아니라 물질로 파악하였다. 바슐라르의 물질적 상상력 이론은 물을 통해 우리 자신의정신적 모습과 우리의 삶을 투영하고 이를 우리의 상상 속에서 재발견해야 한다고 하는 것이다. 물의 물질적 이미지는 활기차고 살아있으며, 다양하고 새로운 이미지의 상상력을 발견하는 매개체가 될 수 있다. 이것은 우리를 새로운 상상의 세계로 나아가게 할뿐만 아니라 현대를 살아가는 우리의 삶과 사회에 대해 새로운 이미지를 그리는 상상력의 가능성을 조망하게될 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the material image of water which can be extended beyond the boundary of visual image and to express it through the medium of ceramics. This study focuses on the possibility of the material imagination of water which lead us go further from stereotype and piecemeal image of water that has dominated in our culture and thinking. Water itself does not have particular form of existence. Influenced by its external environment, water creates various forms. These are visual images produced from the external form of the object. However, there exists material image of water that can be appreciated deeper than the figurative image. The material image is led by the material imagination and revealed based on materiality of the object. French philosopher, Gaston Bachelard(1884-1962), stated that the human imagination is basically materialistic; that we understand the object by material not by form. His material imagination theory tells us to project our mental shape and lives through water so that we could rediscover it within our imagination. The material images of water is vibrant and lively, which at the same time could be a medium to discover imagination of new image. Consequently, the process provides us vision of new imagination which is novel to contemporary life and society.
