Abstract

This study focuses on human visual perception felt in installation art and space among the genres of modern art. After minimalism, contemporary art has formed an external expansion in which the boundaries between the outside and the inside are broken through various expression styles and expansion of fields. Advanced science and technology, which has developed rapidly since the Industrial Revolution, has made mankind accustomed to urban and artificial spaces from nature-oriented spaces. This creates an irony of subconsciously seeking nature while feeling comfortable. In an artificial space that is familiar but at the same time unfamiliar, humans find nature through subconscious memories and experiences. In the developed era, gardens are built in dense urban forests and artificial objects or natural objects are placed in nature to create artificial natural spaces. Gone are the days of passive appreciation of contemporary art simply in space. In the diversity of media and art in the expanded field, the viewer’s visual perception has become an important factor, and the work and space, as well as the experiences felt there, play an important role. Therefore, this paper examines the form of active appreciation of viewers who directly experience contemporary art works. In Chapter 2, the research method examines the works and spaces of contemporary art that appear in natural and artificial spaces through Krauss’s sculptures in the expanded field. Through this, we discuss the visual and perceptual parts of humans and pseudo-nature where everyday space has expanded. Chapter 3 examines the sublime emotions that are revealed through the experience of light, technology, and pseudo-nature. Through James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson’s work we can see installation works that use interior and exterior spaces and cutting-edge science and technology to create quasi-nature and sublime emotions. This study will help the understanding of the possibilities by viewing the sublime moments felt by welcoming artificial nature through interaction with the artist’s work, space, and spectators as an expanded work space.
