Abstract
This study explores the artification of light through a comparative analysis of James Turrell’s architectural light installations at Museum SAN and D’strict’s immersive media exhibition at ARTE Museum Jeju. Using a theoretical framework that integrates Artification Theory, Emotional Design, Flow Theory, Phenomenology of Perception (Merleau-Ponty), Genius Loci (Norberg-Schulz), and Atmosphere Aesthetics (Böhme), the research examines how light functions as both an aesthetic and experiential medium that transforms perception and emotion. The study employs a mixed-method approach combining qualitative spatial analysis and quantitative NLP-based sentiment analysis of multilingual visitor reviews. The results reveal that Turrell’s works generate phenomenological immersion through minimal sensory input and temporal modulation, eliciting introspective and existential reflection. In contrast, D’strict’s installations emphasize affective atmosphere and sensory stimulation, fostering collective and participatory experiences through dynamic light–sound environments. By mapping these differences within the ‘Five Axes of Emotional Design (immersion, emotional resonance, relaxation, sensory stimulation, and narrative structure),’ the study establishes a semantic profile of affective lighting experiences. Ultimately, this research proposes an integrated framework for understanding how light mediates between art, technology, and emotion, illuminating the evolving aesthetics of digital materiality, sensory cognition, and architectural experience. It also provides a methodological contribution by linking phenomenological interpretation with data-driven textual analytics, bridging subjective affect and objective pattern recognition. Through this synthesis, the study positions light as a dynamic cultural agent that redefines the boundaries between art, design, and technological mediation in contemporary spatial experience.
