Abstract
This study analyzes household account books published as supplements in Korean women’s magazines during the 1970s and 1980s to examine family culture and the roles of housewives. In today’s society, where shifts in family structure and the rise of single-person households are closely linked to economic factors, the past practice of keeping household account books emerges as a meaningful action for economic stability and daily management. This study thus interprets the household account book as a cultural text rather than a financial ledger, aiming to examine its significance. The study focuses on nine account books published between 1970 and 1988 in Woman Dong-a, The LADIES Joong-Ang, and Housewife Life. By categorizing the household account book into elements such as cover design, advertisements, income and expenditure records, and personal life entries, this study found that it fulfilled three main functions: 1) as an economic document for tracking income and expenses, 2) as a medium for socio-cultural information, and 3) as a personal record of housewives’ daily lives and family histories. Covers incorporated traditional embroidery, folk painting motifs, and auspicious symbols, often reflecting the work of women designers. While the account books emphasized frugality, the inclusion of advertisements underscored women’s roles as both economic managers and consumers. The content also reinforced contemporary gender ideologies, such as the ideal of the “wise mother, good wife.” Ultimately, the household account book functioned as a cultural mechanism through which women engaged in economic and social practices. These books not only supported the economic management of individual households but also contributed to the maintenance of the national economy through women’s practical labor. This research provides insight into family culture and contributes to reinterpreting women’s roles in Korea’s modern history within broader historical and cultural contexts.
