조각이 가지는 근원적 개념과 성격은 빠르게 발전하는 사회의 모습과 함께 변화하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 다양한 재료와 제작 방식이 생겨남에 따라 조각과 타 장르 예술과의 모호함이 커지는 상황에서 오늘날 유의미한 조각은 어떠한 형태를 지니게 될 것인지 탐구하고 적용하는 데 의의가 있다. 연구는 장르 간 혼합양상을 보이는 오늘날 새로운 접근 방식을 수행한다. 이에 기존 타 장르 작업에 많이 적용된 도상적 분석 방법을 조각 작업에 적용하는 방식으로 진행한다. 작품을 구성하는 요소 분석과 동시에, 본 연구에서 중요시 한 지점은 작품 제작 당시의 시대상, 작가, 관람자의 특성을 포함하고 있어 작품을 보다 다채롭게 분석할 수 있고, 그것이 평면 작업에만 국한되지 않는 프로세스라는 것이다. ‘아이코닉 이미지’는 이 지점에서 조각에 해당 프로세스를 적용하기 위한 필수조건임과 동시에 도상해석학과 분석적 도상의 개념이 담긴 범주를 포함한다. 재료, 입체감의 형성, 장치 사용 여부 등의 범주를 설정하고 기존 작업을 분석하는 과정을 거친다. 이를 통해 조각 작업에서 두드러지는 ‘아이코닉 이미지’의 특이성을 도출한다. 도상적 분석과 동시에 ‘아이코닉 이미지’의 의미와 범위를 정의하기 위해 아이콘(Icon)의 유래와 의미를 분석하고 이를 작품과 연결 지어 볼 수 있도록 구체적인 범주를 설정한다. 마지막으로, 정의된 조각 속 ‘아이코닉 이미지’를 줄리안 오피와 올라퍼 엘리아슨의 작업에 적용하고 분석한다. 이는 조각작품을 도상적 방식으로 분석하고, 실제로 적용하는 과정 이라는 점에서 ‘아이코닉 이미지’의 기능과 형태를 구체적으로 정의할 수 있다. 이는 장르 혼합의 양상을 보이는 오늘날의 조각을 분석하고 만들어내는 방법으로서의 ‘아이코닉 이미지’ 개념으로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this research is for exploring the evolution of the fundamental concept and nature of sculpture in the context of a rapidly changing society. Its aim is to identify and apply forms of sculpture that hold significance in contemporary society, especially given the blurring boundaries between sculpture and other art genres due to the emergence of diverse materials and fabrication methods. This research explores a novel approach to analyzing contemporary art that exhibits interdisciplinary mixing. To this end, it applies iconographic analysis, traditionally used in other genres of work, to sculptural work. Analyzing the Constituent Elements of an Artwork, this study emphasizes that it includes the era, artist, and viewer characteristics at the time of production, enabling a more diverse analysis of the work and demonstrating that it is not a process limited to planar work. At this juncture, the 'iconic image' is a prerequisite for applying this process to sculpture, while also encompassing categories that contain the concepts of iconology and analytical iconography. This involves materials, methods of forming dimension and the use of devices. Through this process, the distinctiveness of the 'iconic image' as it stands out in sculptural works is derived. To define the meaning and scope of 'iconic images' simultaneously with iconographic analysis, the origin and meaning of the icon are analyzed, and specific categories are established to connect it with the work. Finally, a study is conducted to apply and analyze the defined 'iconic images' in sculpture to Julian Opie's and Olafur Eliasson's series. This process, which involves iconographically analyzing sculptural works and then applying that analysis in practice, allows for a concrete definition of the function and form of an 'iconic image'. This concept of the 'iconic image' can be utilized as a method for analyzing and creating contemporary sculpture, which often exhibits characteristics of genre hybridity.
