Abstract
Contemporary sculpture has undergone a significant conceptual transformation since the rise of postmodernism, prompting a fundamental reassessment of its definition, role, form, and ontological status. The traditional material-based conception of sculpture has been restructured in multifaceted ways through its intersection with immateriality, virtuality, conceptual frameworks, and socio-political messages. This shift is not merely stylistic but represents a profound transformation rooted in philosophical discourse and modes of thought. This study investigates the philosophical foundations of postmodern sculpture, focusing on how the boundaries between concept and form, existence and reality have been dismantled and redefined. Particular attention is given to the notions of “essence” and “existence” in analyzing the process through which sculpture has become de-essentialized while simultaneously acquiring new existential meaning. The study interprets the tension between materiality and immateriality, presence and virtuality, and the coexistence of essentialist pursuit and denial in contemporary sculptural practices. The research methodology combines a theoretical review of postmodern aesthetics—drawing on the ideas of Gilles Deleuze, Alain Badiou, and Jean Baudrillard—with case analyses of selected contemporary sculptures. Through this synthesis of theory and practice, the study examines the deconstruction of traditional sculptural values, the ontological reframing of form, sculpture’s ideological functions, and its engagement with digital technologies. Through these inquiries, the study demonstrates that contemporary sculpture functions not merely as a site of formal innovation, but as a space of philosophical and socio-cultural transformation. In doing so, it contributes to expanding the theoretical discourse on sculpture and deepening our understanding of the meaning and mode of artistic existence in the digital age.
