Abstract

This study aims to analyze how augmented reality (AR) technology in public art can promote audience participation and effectively convey social messages. To achieve this, prior studies on socially engaged public art and the interactive and immersive characteristics of AR technology were reviewed, and case studies of AR-based socially engaged public art were selected and analyzed. The selection criteria included: ① works that overcame the physical limitations of public art and realized real-time interaction with audiences through AR technology; ② works that conveyed social messages through intuitive imagery and spatial experience; and ③ works that demonstrated diverse approaches to fostering public engagement. The cases examined were ‘Unmoored by Mel Chin, ‘Border Memorial’ by John Craig Freeman, ‘Black Terminus’ by Damien McDuffie, and ‘JulietToo’ by Tamiko Thiel. The analysis revealed that AR-based public art expanded viewers’ visual and spatial perception through the fusion of real and virtual elements and strengthened the immediacy of messages by combining them with the sense of place and context. In particular, each work addressed specific issues—climate change, border conflicts, Black community history, and women’s social representation—designed to immerse audiences in these topics. Immediate interaction and community-linked structures were also found to foster empathy and sustained participation. These findings indicate that AR technology can expand the social role of public art and maximize the effectiveness of engagement and message delivery beyond physical constraints. This study suggests that future AR-based public art projects should comprehensively consider technology selection, interaction methods, sense of place, and community connectivity, and provides foundational data on the potential for integrating digital technology with socially engaged art.
