Abstract

This study explores the systematic design approaches applied to exhibition poster series produced by specific museums. In addition, it examines the relationship between such design approaches and museum identity. An exhibition poster series refers to a sequence of posters produced for the same museum over a certain period by the same designer, serving as a key medium that shapes the museum’s visual identity and leaves a strong impression on visitors. The research provides an overview of the historical development of systematic exhibition poster series from the mid-20th century to the 2020s across Europe, Asia, and North America, with an in-depth analysis focusing on cases produced after 2000. For the purposes of this study, a systematic exhibition poster series is defined as a set of posters created consecutively by the same designer for a single museum over a fixed period. The analysis examines the visual continuity and typological characteristics of such series, identifying how visualization of exhibition content and spatial systems can stimulate visitors’ memory and interest, as well as how close collaboration between designers and museums can further enhance these effects. The findings confirm that exhibition poster series function as a core tool not only for promoting individual exhibitions but also for building a museum’s identity over the long term and enriching the visitor experience. The visual continuity of a series conveys a sustained sense of the museum’s identity, combining spatial and thematic messages to enable effective communication. This study offers a structured analytical framework for understanding exhibition poster series, while providing practical insights for the development of museum identity and visitor communication strategies.
