Abstract
A museum’s identity has difficulty adapting to the different themes of exhibitions, variable spaces and various applications. Therefore, it is an area that requires flexible design developments but remain consistent. There are visual elements that construct an identity, such as form, color, image and typography. Among these elements, typography was chosen to emphasize the visual identity created by space, direction, location and assisting geometry, which are relative elements of typography. The case study method was chosen as the qualitative study method to organize the concept through prior studies and literature data. This prompted the proposal to use the relative elements of typography in future identity design and in deducing relevant properties. A museum’s identity, which emphasizes visual expression using typography, was selected as the subject of study. This study explored the formativeness and expression methods of the relative elements of typography, i.e., space, direction, location and assisting geometry, and the visual identities of The Tokyo National Art Center, the New Museum, the Museum of Arts Santa Monica, MoMA, Casco, the Central Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam. These museums were analyzed to reveal the security of the diversity of expressing identities and the consistency of various media using visual identity constructed through the relative elements of typography. This article proposes guidelines for use as strategies in the expression of visual identity by attempting a systematic approach to the relative elements of typography. With this effort, museum identities that have variables and can change based on the demands of the times can be developed.
