Abstract

There are 31 kinds of Japanese-published articles on ancient Korean history from the Meiji Restoration to the Russo-Japanese War. Of them, 19 kinds on the Balhae history were examined. In addition to errors of facts, in particular it is noted that, except three kinds of Joseon and Chinese literature translations, all articles describe Balhae as a faithful tributary state to Japan. And, in particular, articles are emphasized that Japan reprimanded Balhae envoys for their rudeness of diplomatic documents. This perception is the result of inheriting the tradition of the Japanese national school of the Edo period, but likewise the writings, which are equipped with modern description systems and offer more knowledge and information than before, show similar trends. Such trends were greatly influenced by the national agency-published Thoughts on Diplomacy(外交志考) and Japanese History Thoughts(稿本 國史眼). Thoughts on Diplomacy is a comprehensive collection of Balhae-Japan diplomatic records, and it incorporated Balhae into the history of Manchuria instead of into the history of Korea. Japanese History Thoughts adopted the modern description system for the first time. Writings on the history of Balhae quoted from Thoughts on Diplomacy, and referred to Japanese History Thoughts for their description systems. Early-modern Japanese history significantly influenced not only subsequent Manchuria-Joseon history but also modern history of Korea.
