Abstract
Goh Jeong-ok criticized the limitations of the oral materials collection conducted in the 1950s. To overcome those limitations, he planned a full-scale collecting project with the Academy of Science’s magazine, People’s Creation (1960-1962). In addition to songs and tales, People’s Creation also included materials related to mask dancing and pansori. In this paper, I examine the materials of Kim Eo-yang, who contributed songs, tales, and pansori to the magazine. Kim contributed varied oral literature to several magazines. Among his contributions to contributions to People’s Creation were legends, people’s songs and pansori created after 1945, and Mask Dance scripts. Kim Eo-yang’s folktale, “Onjeong-teo and the Fairy Rock” (People’s Creation No. 1), was reprinted in Rodongja (June 1962), Women of Legend (1964), and the Oral Materials Collection (1964). Among Kim’s materials, the mask dance scripts are particularly important. of ‘Haeju Talnori’ and ‘Tongcheon Talnori’ were the first to be reported in oral literature. The former recorded the oral materials of Jang Liang-sun, who was famous for mask dance. The latter has been studied with reference to Kwon Taek-mu’s North Korean folk play (1966). Although Kwon relied on Kim Eo-yang's materials, he revealed that he intentionally distorted them in the course of his work.
