Abstract

This study aims to analyze the biographical writing style and significance of historical figures in Hoebong Ha Gyeom-jin’s “Myeongjang Yuljeon (Biographies of Great Generals)” and “Yongjang Yuljeon (Biographies of Brave Generals)”. Additionally, to gain an accurate understanding of these texts, this study also examines their historical background. Hoebong composed these biographies during the oppressive period of Japanese colonial rule, with the intention of inspiring national pride and reinforcing the national identity. His historiographical approach is deeply rooted in the historical perspective that is perceivable in another of his works, namely “Gukseongron (Treatise on National Essence)”. Thus, this study investigates the points of intersection between “Gukseongron” and his biographical writings to show how the concept of national essence, as outlined in “Gukseongron”, is reflected in the structure of the biographies. Furthermore, this study closely examines Hoebong’s explicit authorial commentary in each biography to clarify his writing intentions and thematic focus. Based on the findings of the analysis, the study also explores the traditional structure of biographical literature and the unique modifications Hoebong introduced. Specifically, it examines how his portrayal of figures such as Eulji Mundeok, Kim Yu-shin, Gang Gam-chan, and Yi Sun-sin concretizes the abstract values of loyalty and valor. Ultimately, this study reveals that Hoebong’s “Myeongjang Yuljeon” and “Yongjang Yuljeon” are not merely biographical collections but rather represent significant literary efforts aimed at restoring the national identity and fostering national pride amid the challenges of the Japanese colonial period.
