Abstract
This paper examines the content regarding Unified Silla described in middle and high school textbooks of South and North Korea, analyzing the perceptions associated with it. In South Korea, new textbooks were published in 2025 following the revision of the educational curriculum in 2022. Meanwhile, in North Korea, the contents of textbooks were revised after Kim Jong-un came to power. Naturally, not only has the description of Korean ancient history, particularly Unified Silla, changed, but the perceptions surrounding it have also evidently shifted. The middle and high school textbooks published in South Korea in 2025 adopt the title "Unified Silla and Balhae," replacing the previously used term "Era of the Southern and Northern States," which is no longer visible. On the other hand, North Korean textbooks do not use the term "Unified Silla" at all, instead referring to it as "Late Silla History." This reflects a fundamental difference in perception regarding Silla’s unification of the Three Kingdoms. Such differences in perception ultimately demonstrate contrasting perspectives on Silla's unification of the Three Kingdoms. North Korea places significant emphasis on Balhae as the successor to Goguryeo, highlighting the historical legitimacy connecting Goguryeo to Balhae. In contrast, South Korea prioritizes Unified Silla over Balhae, emphasizing the historical inevitability linking Unified Silla to Goryeo. To bridge these differences in perspective regarding Unified Silla as seen in South and North Korean middle and high school textbooks, new alternatives are required, along with a shift in perception among scholars. The need to establish a new foundation for historiography, one that accommodates a single ethnicity while embracing two distinct viewpoints, is evident.
