Abstract
The desire for peace is universal, yet wars have persisted throughout human history. Why has war never disappeared? Is there such a thing as a just war? In pursuit of a theological response to these enduring questions, this study examines the concept of just war as articulated by the Reformers, Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin. Firstly, Zwingli directly participated in the First and Second Battles of Kappel (1529, 1531), while Calvin indirectly guided or influenced the engagement of the Huguenots during the French Wars of Religion (1562–1598). Both were deeply concerned with the question of why Christians should engage in warfare. Secondly, Zwingli and Calvin theologically articulated the conditions of a just war, grounding their arguments in God’s providence and Scripture as the ultimate standard for Christian conscience and ethical discernment. However, Calvin went beyond Zwingli by addressing how Christians in the context of the emerging early modern state, should assess the justice of war. Lastly, this study concludes by examining how these theological perspectives remain relevant for Christians in contemporary South Korea as they evaluate the concept of a just war.
