Abstract
This thesis will revolve around the concept of just war, and attempt to find new ideas from a Korean perspective in a dialectical way. In doing so, it deals with the just war theory proposed by St. Augustine and outlined by Thomas Aquinas, and applies it to the Korean situation. This process of articulation is required when we consider the grave prospect of war on the Korean peninsula because North Korea has become a global issue with which the world must solve immediately. War is usually a failure, a demonstration of the corrupt human nature no matter what the circumstances are. Military battles always become deplorable and is to be avoided at all costs. However, there are times when war is just and even morally required. A war against insane tyrants like Hitler is one clear example. Such wars can have positive effects on advancing human welfare and making the world a safer place to live in. But the reality is that few wars have achieved this end. We thus need to give peace and diplomatic endeavors many chances before we even think of resorting to a military solution. We appreciate the moral concern of pacifists and the military understanding of militarists, while taking seriously the realistic thoughts on just war. However, we Koreans are destined to seek the denuclearization and reunification of the peninsular, contributing to the peace and prosperity of the world, according to the peace-creating economy of the Lord who put to death their hostility through the cross(Eph. 2:16).
