뉴턴 과학에 대한 신학의 영향- <프린키피아> 일반 주해를 중심으로 -

아이작 뉴턴 하면 성공한 과학자와 근대 과학혁명가의 모습을 쉽게 떠올리게 된다. 그런데 뉴턴은 과학뿐 아니라 연금술, 신학에 대해서 많은 작업을 하였다. 이 글에서나는『프린키피아』일반 주해를 중심으로 뉴턴 과학과 신학의 관계를 탐색하고자 한다. 저명한 과학사가인 리차드 웨스트폴의 주장에 따르면, 뉴턴 과학에 대한 신학의영향은 미비하였으나 뉴턴의 신학에 대한 과학의 영향력은 상당하였다. 이 영향으로이신론적 신학이 부상했다. 웨스트폴은 뉴턴을 이신론자로 보았다. 그런데 뉴턴은 이신론자라기보다는 도리어 이신론에 대해 강한 거부감을 가진 사람이었다. 그래서 이신론에 대항하며 자연신학을 고취하기 위해 『프린키피아』를 저술하였다. 그리고 뉴턴은 신의 통치, 신의 편재성 등 신 이해를 바탕으로 공간과 물질 운동에 대해 철학적사고를 펼쳤다. 이러한 신학적, 철학적 사고는 뉴턴의 과학 실천 가운데 인식적 요소로 전환되어 절대공간, 중력의 법칙과 같은 뉴턴 과학의 주요 요소가 형성되게 하는밑천이 되었다. 핵심어:
Abstract
Many people regard simply Isaac Newton as a successful scientist and a modern scientific revolutionist. However, Newton had a wide variety of interests. He did his research in many fields and left special works on physics, philosophy, alchemy and theology. In this article I’d like to research the relationship between Newton’s science and theology with ‘General Scholium’ of Principia. Richard Westfall, a famous historian of science, insisted that Newton’ science had significant influence on his theology but the effect of Newton’s theology on science was not clear. Westfall thought Newton as a deist. But I don’t agree with his opinion. Newton was a man who showed resistance to the deism. So he wrote Principia to encourage natural theology and to counteract the deism. Besides, Newton developed philosophical ideas on absolute space and the motion of matter based on his understanding of God―the ruler of universe, the omnipresent God and the provident God. His theological and philosophical ideas converted into epistemic factor through the scientific practice and became essential resources to form the main factors of Newton’s science such as absolute space and the law of gravity.
