초록

우리는 본고에서 크게 세 가지 내용을 다루고자 한다. 첫째는 깔뱅이“반과학적(反科學的)”이라는 오해에 대해 살펴보는 것이고, 둘째는과학에 대한 깔뱅의 신학적 근거를 살펴보는 것이며, 셋째는 신학의 주요 작업에 속했던 성서해석과 관련하여 깔뱅은 과학을 어떻게 취급했는지‘하나님의 적응 이론’(the doctrine of divine accommodation;accommodatio Dei)을 중심으로, 몇 가지 실례를 통해 살펴보는 것이다. 우리는 위의 과제를 수행하기 위해 깔뱅의『기독교강요』(1559), 주석서를 비롯한 제1차 자료들과, 국내외 관련 제2차 자료들을 사용할것이다.

Abstract

This study is to investigate John Calvin’s thought on science in his writings. This article will discuss three points. First, was Calvin anti-science compared to Copernicus? Though Calvin agreed with the cosmology represented by Aristotle and did not accept the new astronomy of the Copernican theory, he did not condemn Copernicus and his followers unlike Luther and Melanchthon. His rejection of the new astronomy of Copernican does not result in him being anti-science. Second, the theological ground of Calvin’s thought on science is not only revelatory, but also pneumatological. Concerning God’s revelation, Calvin has two books. One is the book of nature and the other is the book of Bible. Science is related to the book of nature. Calvin regards science as God’s gift. If one regards the Spirit of God as the sole fountain of truth, one shall neither reject the truth, nor despised it wherever it shall appear, unless one desires to dishonor the Spirit of God. The ‘naturalia dona’ includes government, household management, all kinds of mechanical skills, liberal arts, etc. Lastly, Calvin applied the theory of the divine accommodation (accommodatio Dei) to interpret the creation in his commentaries. His theory of biblical interpretation liberated scientists from biblical literalism and allowed for further scientific development. According to Calvin, theology is not in competition with science. Theology and science are both fields that enable people to know better wisdom about God.
